LOCUM Band 8 Biomedical Scientist – Biochemistry

Band: 8a
Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Rate: £30 – £40 per hour (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Locum (initial 3–6 months with potential extension)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 8 Biomedical Scientist with specialist expertise in Clinical Biochemistry to join a busy and well-equipped NHS laboratory in Durham on a locum basis.
About the Role:
The successful candidate will support the delivery of a high-quality clinical biochemistry service and provide leadership in technical and quality matters. This role is ideal for an experienced BMS looking for a senior position with the flexibility of a locum contract.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage daily operations in the biochemistry department
- Maintain compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards and contribute to audits and quality assurance
- Supervise and support junior staff, ensuring training and competency assessments are up to date
- Assist with analyser maintenance, troubleshooting, and method validation
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely and accurate results are delivered for patient care
Essential Requirements:
- HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Extensive post-registration experience in Clinical Biochemistry
- Proven ability to work independently and lead a team
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and governance
- Experience using modern automated platforms (e.g., Roche, Abbott, Beckman)
Desirable Skills:
- MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science or a relevant subject
- Experience in LIMS and middleware systems
- Previous locum or Band 8-level experience
