Manchester City Council are seeking a highly skilled Highway Engineer to work on some of the most challenging, interesting, and meaningful projects across Greater Manchester. With the city's ambitious plans for the next few years, this position provides excellent opportunities for career development in a range of professional disciplines.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Manage and maintain highways, including defect repairs, gully cleansing, drainage improvement programmes, and winter maintenance such as gritting.
  • Oversee the maintenance of highway structures like bridges, culverts, and retaining walls.
  • Handle contracts related to the aforementioned workstreams, ensuring technical engineering, performance, quality, and commercial checks are conducted.
  • Perform engineering duties such as measurement, setting out, dealing with materials and specifications, traffic management, and GMRAPS permitting.
  • Lead project communication with all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, TfGM, and elected members, addressing enquiries and organising consultation events.
  • Undertake traffic engineering and highway design feasibility studies as required.
  • Collaborate with other Council sections and developers for a cohesive approach to traffic management.
  • Manage budgets and projects, maintaining financial and procurement accountability.
  • Lead on the technical delivery/approval of highway design and traffic engineering projects when necessary, ensuring compliance with current design guidance and legislation.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Relevant highway engineering or highway design experience.
  • Undergraduate degree or MSc in a relevant transportation or engineering discipline, or HNC/HND in Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with relevant institution membership is desirable.
