Head of Grounds

Overview:

You will work autonomously to oversee and develop the school grounds, sports pitches, and external areas of both School sites. You will ensure the school maintains a safe and habitable facility for the use by pupils and staff by responding to requests for the preparations of the grounds in such a way that they meet fully the requirements to provide a full sports programme and maintain the appearance of the school to an exceptionally high standard throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the programme of sporting fixtures and pitch requirements ensuring there is sufficient maintenance time for grounds activities.
  • Marking and the subsequent over-marking of pitches for Cricket, Rugby, and Girls Football
  • Preparing facilities for external hirers or partnership activities
  • Provide leadership and direction to the staff within the grounds team
  • Ensure the optimal playing quality of the sports grounds
  • Advise on priorities and manage the agreed annual budget
  • Control and account for all the materials, stock, and machinery within your area of control
  • Ensure that safe working procedures are in place so that staff are competent with equipment
  • Ensure that all H&S regulations are adhered to by staff and that risk assessments are in place
  • Be able to respond in an emergency.
  • Supervision of work undertaken by contractors to ensure compliance
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment is maintained by all Grounds staff
  • Maintaining full attendance records for the team.
  • Carry out annual Performance Development Reviews and training requirements for the Grounds staff.
  • Maintaining a tree programme.
  • Assist in budget process, capital replacement plan and projects.
  • Ensure that the formal School gardens are planted, weeded and maintained to a high standard.
  • Coordinate the grounds department at both College and Prep School sites.
  • Maintenance of artificial sports surfaces.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • 5 years' experience in a similar role, preferably minor county's Cricket and/or Football and Rugby.
  • NVQ Level 3 (or an equivalent qualification or significant experience) in Sports Turf Management.
  • Possess a passion for cricket pitches and sports turf maintenance.
  • Able to motivate and communicate effectively with staff.
  • Track record on preparing and producing top quality playing surfaces for Cricket, Football and Rugby.
  • Understanding of current Health and Safety regulations.
  • Understanding the seasonal nature of the role and need for flexibility.
  • Hold a PA1, PA2, and PA6 pesticide certificate.
  • Knowledge and experience of artificial playing surfaces.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to relate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a systematic and disciplined approach to problem-solving.
  • Proven experience at supervisory/management level in a similar role.
  • Full clean driving with the ability to pull trailers and drive tractors and other horticultural machinery.
  • Must be polite and professional at all times.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multicultural environment
  • Fully knowledgeable of the Health and Safety regulations in the areas of responsibility
  • Proven experience of completing risk assessments and training in safe working.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of legislation relating to chemicals and dangerous substances.
  • ICT literate.

Desirable:

  • IOG membership or equivalent.
  • Educated to "A" level or equivalent standard.
  • H&S qualification and experience.
  • General qualifications grade A-C or 9-4 in Maths and English or equivalent.
  • PTC Chain Saw
