Role Purpose:

The Head of Business Assurance will primarily be responsible for working with senior business partners to develop and mature internal control procedures to enable the company to implement an effective control framework and meet its UK Corporate Governance Code reporting requirements. This will involve working with functional management to ensure that controls have been designed and are operating effectively and that formal documented evidence is retained to support compliance audit procedures.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team, with additional support from a co-source provider, to deliver controls advisory and controls assurance work across the Group on a global basis.

  • Work with Senior Functional Stakeholders to develop and embed effective material controls over financial reporting and accounting, compliance, IT, Operations, Fraud and non-financial reporting areas.

  • Key deliverables include:

  • Identifying and mitigating gaps in internal control and driving process efficiency

  • Creation of documented procedures, process flows and controls

  • Deployment of a global annual controls assurance program with reporting to the Audit and Risk Committee, leveraging the three lines of defence assurance model

  • Provision of second line assurance over the effectiveness of the design and operation of material controls (planning and completing tests of controls).

  • Actively seek standardisation and automation through efficient use of systems.

  • Evaluating, reporting and resolving control deficiencies to ensure the adequacy of material internal controls

  • Acting as an Internal Control champion for the wider business providing second line of assurance advisory support and creating an internal control compliance culture within the business.

  • Leading functional internal control improvement initiatives.

  • Assisting the IT function with user access provisioning controls, including access control management and segregation of duties.

  • Keeping up to date with emerging regulations in regard to Internal Control (e.g. UK Corporate Governance Reform).

  • Liaise with the external auditor to remediate control deficiencies identified during the external audit.

  • Liaise with the Internal Audit team to identify internal control issues arising from their work and drive remedial action.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Significant experience from a similar position in a multinational group or delivering similar services via Big 4 or mid-tier audit firm.
  • Strong experience and interest for how technology and financial systems can support internal control effectiveness and efficiency.
  • A background in Internal Controls, Internal Audit or Business Assurance is Essential for this role
  • Solid understanding and experience with internal control frameworks including COSO.
  • Ability to be diplomatic and yet persistent in the implementation of controls and resolution of identified control deficiencies.
  • Strong project management skills
