Critical Services Engineer

The role holder will coordinate and assist other engineers and selected specialist contractors in the maintenance, repair, construction and refurbishment of new or modified services. Ensure that engineers working under their direction, including 3rd party service engineers or contractors and other University staff, work to required quality and safety standards.

Key Areas of Responsibility.

Planned Reactive Maintenance

  • Duties will involve responding to emergency situations associated with the building services within the Data Centre estate. You will have the necessary experience to plan, perform and document the routine maintenance tasks for a complex service including, LV switchgear and distribution, diesel generators, uninterruptable power supplies, high volume air conditioning, humidity controls, chilled water system with hybrid cooling towers, pumps and filters (water and fuel), fire detection and suppression systems, heating and cooling, and building controls (BMS).
  • Be part of an on-call rota providing 24*7*365 support. This involves having the ability to make critical decisions outside of normal hours for the £20m facility (and other sites) to ensure operational support for customers.

Vendor Management

  • Place emergency requests with internal and external Vendors for failures beyond the scope of the Maintenance team, ensuring that they provide timely updates and progress reports on any failures reported to them.
  • Maintain an agreed local stock of critical spares from vendors to ensure component failure does not impact on Infrastructure availability.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure adherence to Critical Environment work rules and safety procedures. Issue permit to work in plant areas for both contractors and University staff. Carries out appropriate safe isolation procedures on LV electrical distribution.
  • Ensure Legionella testing is carried out to agreed schedule to meet current legislation. Maintain a record of all test results.
  • Review and approve all Risk Assessment / Method Statements for work to be performed on site by external parties and other University staff.

Projects and Other Duties

  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for other Server Room infrastructure (not necessarily within the University Information Service portfolio).
  • Perform general maintenance and repair activities for areas outside of core responsibility, i.e general building issues and grounds activities.
  • Perform electrical installations for small power, lighting, security and data circuits
  • For small projects within the skill set of the individual, they must develop the project scope and provide hands on planning and routine daily management of activities, including reporting to senior staff members.

Supervision

  • Supervises and assists site teams comprising maintenance team of fitters/plant operators and contractors, for the completion of emergency repair, modification and service requiring liaison with department staff.
  • You will certainly recognise engineering problems beyond the ability of the maintenance team; escalates to obtain support from selected specialist contractors to ensure successful completion of the work.

Operational Management

  • You will receive direct telephone communications during the working day from the Helpdesk in relation to emergencies. In this situation it's likely you will either attend personally or direct a member of the team or contractor.
  • Specifies materials and parts, coordinates with Buyer/Stores personnel on a daily basis to source materials within agreed time scale and at the most competitive price
  • Maintain accurate records of booking materials in/out
  • Assist project design teams and managers to convert theoretical mechanical and electrical design plans into practical workable solutions

Essential Qualifications:

General education to A-level standard, ONC, HNC/D or equivalent

BS7671 - "Requirements for Electrical Installations. IET Wiring Regulations" 17th Edition certification

City and Guilds 2382 - Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (or equivalent).

Hours: 8.30am - 5pm Monday to Friday
