SEN Tribunal and Mediation Officer

We are seeking a Tribunal and Mediations Officer to coordinate and collate information to support the Local Authority in disputes regarding special educational needs support arrangements. The ideal candidate will have experience working with a mediation service, school and families and tribunal work, including attending hearings where necessary. The job will also include working with the Senior SEN officers in the Team on complex casework primarily linked to EOTAS packages and EHC children and young people.

This role is on a hybrid basis.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Coordinate and collate information to support dispute resolution regarding special educational needs support arrangements.
  • Attend resolution meetings with parents and other professionals to settle disputes without formal legal redress whenever possible.
  • Negotiate changes to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) to ensure the best outcomes for children.
  • Attend the Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal to present and defend the Local Authority's case.
  • Work to tight statutory deadlines, using initiative and flexibility.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good negotiation skills and a strong eye for accuracy and detail.
  • Organised with the ability to use initiative and work to tight statutory deadlines.
  • Flexibility in approach and good general ICT skills.
  • Experience of legal or tribunal processes.
  • Understanding of special educational needs legislation in relation to EHCPs.
  • Knowledge of SEN legislative framework, relevant Government policy, initiatives, and the guidance within the SEN and Disability Code of Practice, 2014.
  • Experience working within a local authority carrying out tribunal officer duties.
  • Ability to manage potentially challenging interpersonal situations.
  • Analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work without supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues, members of the public, and partners.
