Senior Data Management Professional - Taxonomist

As part of the Data Management Lab (DML) department, we're responsible for supporting the development, enablement, and implementation of data management best practices that enable the delivery of "ready-to-use" data.

What's the role?

As a Senior Taxonomist, you will be pivotal in the development of taxonomies across the firm, specifically consulting with teams around organizational methods to support a variety of use cases - classification, implementation, validation, and more! The day-to-day will vary, some days you may be reviewing proposed taxonomies and providing feedback. On other days, you may be constructing controlled vocabularies, which will be used as standard reference data. Your work will touch a multitude of domains across Bloomberg, covering many departments like Data, Product and Engineering.

We'll trust You To:

  • Lead the development and implementation of taxonomies to represent complex domains, promote FAIR principles, and build bridges from legacy products to emerging solutions.
  • Work closely with stakeholders, subject matter experts, product owners, and engineers to understand their use cases, requirements, dependencies to critically evaluate proposed solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders by articulating complex ideas using accurate terminology with relatable examples, as well as, asking clarifying questions to define organizational strategies.
  • Recognize patterns across disparate workstreams, make abstractions, using a combination of approaches (top-down, bottom-up, etc.).
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate on the importance and usage of taxonomies, and drive adoption.
  • Establish and oversee governance processes to ensure consistent application and compliance with taxonomy standards.
  • Balance timeliness with quality under tight deadlines, managing multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate end-to-end relevance to stakeholder needs, from gathering competency questions to finding traction with integrations.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices to continually refine and improve taxonomy strategies.

You'll need to have:

  • Please note we use years of experience as a guide but we certainly will consider applications from all candidates who are able to demonstrate the skills necessary for the role.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing and managing taxonomies and/or ontologies for real-world applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive results, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Communicate complex topics with appropriate scope to varying audiences.

We'd love to see:

  • Strong knowledge of ontology and taxonomy development tools (e.g., Protégé, TopBraid Composer, PoolParty, etc.).
  • Proficiency in ontology languages and standards such as OWL, RDF, SKOS, and SHACL.
  • Understanding of Data Governance and Data Management, supported by industry certifications (e.g. DAMA CDMP, DCAM, etc.)
  • Experience with collaborative development and version control systems (e.g. git).
  • Exposure to the Bloomberg Terminal and/or Enterprise data products.
  • Experience with collaborative design platforms, such as Miro, Figma, and LucidChart.
