The IT Infrastructure Manager role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the world's leading research Institutes at a crucial time in its evolution, and play a definitive role in shaping it for the future.

The Information Technology Office (ITO) team within the Francis Crick Institute is responsible for the design, implementation and operation of all IT applications which manage the running of the institute, along with the publication and library services provided to scientists.

Within this team, this role will be responsible for the long-term strategy, planning and successful delivery of underpinning services related to IT infrastructure across multiple datacentres, including system administration, on-premises virtualisation and related storage infrastructure, as well as backup and archive services for all enterprise and research data, as well as informing and supporting our Information Security approach.

The role will lead the work to successfully roadmap, design, implement, and continually improve IT infrastructure services to the Crick operations and science community and work closely with stakeholders across the institute as well as extensively with collaborating research and commercial partner organisations. This will include operational responsibility for delivery under external managed service contracts that depend on these underpinning services, an area of rapid growth for the organisation.

Responsibilities of our IT Infrastructure Manager:

Your duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Defining a technology vision and roadmap for Enterprise IT Infrastructure in line with the growing and diverse needs of the Crick, to support both operations and research processes.
  • The role will line manage one or more members of the Infrastructure and Cloud Systems Team and additionally matrix manage other team members, including on occasions, members of other teams, under the direction of the Director of IT Operations.
  • Architecture, Design, Implementation and Operation of underpinning services for the IT environment and associated infrastructure.
  • Working with the CISO and Chief Data Officer to ensure technology support and implementation of best data security practice and policy as applied to research working practices.
  • Close working with Research Computing Platforms team to ensure effective use of tooling, including de-duplication of services where possible.
  • Upskilling of individuals and teams in the use and maintenance of IT infrastructure services, including those outside of line management and from external organisations.

Skills and experience we are looking for in our IT Infrastructure Manager :

  • Experience of leading on the design, maintenance and optimisation of IT infrastructure services across multiple data centres including externally managed.
  • Extensive experience managing virtualisation clusters.
  • Extensive experience with a variety of storage technologies including object storage, RAID, NAS, SANs, tape libraries.
  • Experience managing an IBM Spectrum Protect (formally TSM) or similar environment.
  • Proven track record in managing disaster recovery plans for IT Infrastructure.
  • An understanding of the standards, requirements and processes for effective management of IT infrastructure services, including readiness for on-the-spot audits as required by a number of financial and other operational regulatory controls.
  • Ability to manage complex services and projects effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, a finite pool of resource, and against deadlines.
