Wellcome Genome Campus Ltd ("WGCL") is seeking to recruit a Head of Health, Safety and Risk to play crucial role in the development and operation of its renowned scientific research campus.

The Wellcome Genome Campus ("WGC" or the "Campus") is a leading genomic research campus and home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute ("Sanger") and the European Bioinformatics Institute. Sanger is Wellcome's largest charitable initiative, having founded and funded the Campus and Sanger since 1992. Today, over 2,500 people work at the Campus that comprises c.1 million square feet of space set within a 135-acre estate in Hinxton, 9 miles south of Cambridge. The range of facilities include laboratories and associated research facilities, offices, recreational space including a restaurant, gym and nursery, a hotel and conference centre, residential accommodation and a data centre. The estate is set within a beautiful campus environment.

A major expansion of the WGC is underway with planning consent obtained in 2021 for c.1.6 million square feet of gross research and development space (laboratories and offices) primarily to be used for genomics and bioinformatics related activities, which are already core to the Campus. The planning consent also provides for 335,000 square feet of supporting uses (nursery, conference centre, health club, hotel etc.) and 1,500 homes. The expansion is expected to take 10-15 years to fully develop with the first buildings delivered in Phase 1 to become income generating in 2-3 years' time. "WGCL" will be responsible for the Estate Management of the whole Campus.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Health, Safety and Risk will play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement across WGC. Operating across the organisation and campus, this key enabling role will provide exemplary health and safety leadership and will develop and deliver the health, safety, and risk management strategy ensuing that WGCL's health, safety and business continuity risks are mitigated and managed proactively. You will be driven to identify areas for improvement and find solutions to potential risk, ensuring the Campus supports world-class research, innovation and enterprise to deliver life-changing science.
