About the team

Surrey Children's Academy are working in partnership to recruit, develop and retain a workforce that gives the best care and support to children, young people and families in Surrey. To achieve this we are invested in developing new social workers through different training pathways and supporting them in their early careers. This role sits within the team that supports social work students on placement within the Council and also provides assessment for newly qualified social workers (NQSW) on their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).

About the role

Our vision for the ASYE is that NQSWs are supervised by a Team Manager and assessed during their programme by a separate ASYE Assessor. The Assessor is an Advanced Social Worker with extensive work experience in a number of fields who will meet with the NQSW on a monthly basis, be one of the trainers at the monthly ASYE Learning Event and advocate for them to ensure that their volume and complexity of allocations is where it should be at each review stage - these occur at three, six and twelve months where formal reports are written by the Assessor.

We work autonomously with our assigned learners however, as a team together, the manager, our Advanced Social Workers and our Practice Educators all collaborate and support one another to deliver teaching and learning opportunities.
You may already have undertaken Practice Educator training, although if not this can be undertaken when in role. There can be considerable cross over between PE and ASYE roles.

Shortlisting criteria

To be considered for shortlisting, your CV and personal statement should clearly evidence the following:

  • A Social Work qualification such as a Degree, Masters or Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work and registered with Social Work England
  • Substantial experience of assessment and working with children, young people and their families within a statutory setting
  • Ability to contribute to and provide professional leadership of organisational change and development and promote positive working relationships in and across teams, using strategies for collaboration and arbitration
  • Excellent partnership working skills
  • Ability to write assessment documents, letters, emails and reports in a way that is clear and easily understood by anyone reading them
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with others, support colleagues both within and outside of the team and contribute to the successful achievement of team goals, sharing information and learning whilst supporting others
  • Ability and willingness to develop effective professional reflective supervision skills

Social Workers will be expected to have a valid driving licence to drive in the UK, access to a vehicle and be willing to travel across a wide geographical area.
