The role

Are you looking for a rewarding career where you can utilise your Construction Management expertise coupled with your experience of supporting on complex projects and/or programmes? If yes, then we have a fantastic opportunity for you at United Utilities (UU) as a Construction Delivery Manager.

As a Construction Delivery Manager, you will successfully manage the provision of Construction Management Services within Delivery. This is to be achieved by ensuring that professional standards are met, appropriate procedures are developed and maintained to support the successful delivery of projects on the programme.

Area responsibility include ensuring that all major capital construction work undertaken by UU carried out by contractors is completed safely, as per specification, to agreed quality and in the manner required by UU. This will include managing the performance of contractors' work against UU, customer and regulatory standards.

In-person attendance is required three days per week at our Lingley Mere, Warrington site to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, alongside flexibility of hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

Key accountabilities

  • Being accountable for the construction portfolio within the relevant business function, as well as externally representing UU when required. The Construction Delivery Manager will sit on the business area leadership team and be the point of contact for construction escalations.
  • Lead a direct team of Senior Construction Managers, Construction Managers, Construction Co-ordinators, graduates and apprentices
  • Key management of Supply Chain Partner relationships at senior level
  • Carry out project and programme reviews, recommend / take action as appropriate and report on a monthly basis
  • Manage cost centre budgets and prioritise where required
  • Secure resources, deploy and manage Construction teams across the matrix organisation including engaging with consultants and specialists
  • Applying risk management to drive the delivery of opportunities or threat reduction, including adequate escalation of issues outside of your control.
  • Providing timely management information in order to drive the change
  • Develop and maintain a strategic approach to supporting and delivering the capital programme
  • Actively promote the sharing of lessons learned across the Capital Programme
  • Ensure co-ordination and co-operation of own employees and Supply Chain Partners with other UU departments and external bodies for the purposes of work execution, auditing and reporting.
  • Participate in the selection, induction, evaluation of direct reports and recommend training and development of employees. This includes taking into account long-term career development needs as well as improving effectiveness in performance of current job.
  • Assure compliance with CDM and Health and Safety best practice on behalf of UU, including engaging with Business Leadership Team

Skills & experience
To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Educated to degree level (ideally in Engineering) or equivalent and with well-rounded experience in managing construction contracts.
  • A high level of financial, managerial and analytical skill will be required to manage contracts to ensure delivery to defined timescales
  • Experience in managing and leading a team including recruitment and deployment.
  • Detailed working knowledge of the performance standards, regulatory and UU requirements, SLAs and turnaround times etc. expected of the contractor
  • Understanding of the technical nature and management of major works contracts
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental policy application
  • An excellent communicator and negotiator.

It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following?desirable?criteria:

  • APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or similar
  • IOSH Managing Safely or SMSTS
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years relevant industry experience
