Job Overview:
We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant HLTA/English to join our English department in a dynamic and supportive secondary school. The successful candidate will work alongside the English teaching team to support students' learning and development in reading, writing, and communication. You will be instrumental in providing focused support to students of all abilities, helping them to gain confidence and improve their skills in English.

Key Responsibilities for a HLTA/English:

  • Support the planning and delivery of engaging English lessons, working with students across Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Assist in teaching key areas of the English curriculum, including literature, language, grammar, and creative writing.
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support, targeting students who need additional help with reading comprehension, writing techniques, and exam preparation.
  • Deliver lessons and lead whole-class activities in the absence of the class teacher, following pre-prepared lesson plans.
  • Offer targeted interventions for students with additional needs, including those with SEN, EAL, or those working below expected levels.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback to help them improve their literacy skills.
  • Help create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, encouraging students to engage with texts and express their ideas confidently.
  • Assist with resource preparation, classroom activities, and support the teacher in planning lessons and marking work.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies and resources within the English department to support student learning.
  • Support extracurricular activities, such as reading clubs, creative writing workshops, and revision sessions, to enhance student engagement with English.
  • Uphold school behaviour and safeguarding policies, ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

Qualifications and Experience to be a successful HLTA/English:

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience working in a secondary school.
  • Strong knowledge of English language and literature, with experience supporting English teaching at the secondary level.
  • Experience working with students across a range of abilities, including those with SEN and EAL.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and take the lead when necessary, including delivering lessons and managing the classroom in the teacher's absence.
  • A commitment to supporting student progress and fostering a love for reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  • A collaborative, team-focused mindset, with a dedication to contributing to the school's wider community and objectives.
