Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Ranger to join our small but friendly team.

Hours: This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. You'll work 1560 hours over the duration of the contract, and on average, you'll work 30 hours per week but again, this will be flexible depending on operational demand.

Salary: £19,200 per annum

Contract: Permanent

You may be required to work the odd weekend and bank holiday. You'll act as Duty Manager by opening and closing the Great Tower and coordinating the response to any on-site emergency situations which may occur.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Property Operations Manager, you'll deliver excellent site maintenance and be responsible for delivery of the site's biodiversity management plan. You'll protect and care for the site's natural habitats and wildlife and undertake physical work in varying weather conditions. Although there will always be other property team members on site you'll often be lone working and as such will be expected to manage your own time, budget, and plan your workload accordingly.

What you'll be doing

As a Ranger you are a guardian of the National Trust's outdoor spaces and an advocate for their importance. You're a champion of nature conservation and play a crucial role in keeping the Castle and its grounds in good shape, for the benefit of its wildlife, the local community, and the Castle's many visitors.

Maintaining the site in your care to the highest standard, you'll regularly carry out routine activities such as mowing, strimming, reed cutting, weeding, and hedge cutting. You'll also complete compliance tasks relating to health & safety and risk management, and lead and inspire a group of dedicated volunteers, including work planning and delivering training. You'll organise and maintain the tools, vehicles and equipment associated with your responsibilities and will be responsible for implementing the site's biodiversity management plan, incorporating condition and wildlife surveys and tree safety management. You'll also lead and manage specific projects relevant to the role including moat maintenance (e.g., reed cutting) during the winter months. Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you're:

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you're doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence
