Head of Internal Audit

The finance team are looking to hire a qualified Head of Internal Audit to join them on a permanent basis.

Your new role
The Head of Internal Audit will lead the Internal Audit Team and have line management responsibilities for the Auditors. You'll report to the Director of Corporate Services & Accounts, with direct access to the Chief Executive's Office (CEO), In addition, you will provide assurance to the Executive Team, Audit Committee and Board that internal controls are adequate and fit for purpose.

You will lead a professional, high quality internal audit function that follows an independent, disciplined approach to evaluate and suggest areas to enhance the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes through risk-based and objective assurance, advice and insight. You will ensure that resource continues to focus on the areas of highest risk to the business, building an internal audit framework to ensure delivery of an independent and objective risk-based internal audit service.

In addition, you will develop the team and audit plan based on best practice risk-based auditing and develop the team's capacity to add real value to the business through review and recommendations of alternative delivery options. Your team will work with, and provide assurance to, the External Auditors, supporting their work programme and liaise with the Executive Team and senior management to ensure that findings are communicated clearly, recommendations are agreed with, and appropriate action is taken on a timely basis to address areas of concern.

What you'll need to succeed
You will hold a full accountancy or internal audit qualification, and you will hold in-depth knowledge of the Public Sector Internal Audit Standards and other statutory duties along with good knowledge of internal control systems, procedures and practices across a broad range of services, and enhanced knowledge of fraud risk identification, assessment and controls. You will also have extensive experience in assessing and testing internal controls and be able to deliver evidence-based recommendations using analytical skills. You will also have a good ability to grasp unfamiliar business areas or topics quickly and identify potential risks and improvements and have experience of preparing and presenting reports to senior management and/or external audiences.

In addition, you will have strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated through effective relationships and communication, including the ability to build collaborative relationships and handle difficult/complex communications with a variety of stakeholders including external third parties, highly developed staff management skills with experience of developing and leading a high calibre team that delivers quality work and an ability to effectively prioritise and work to multiple agreed deadlines through effective planning, organising and coordination skills.
