Empowering Learning are a market leading education recruitment company. We are working in partnership with an alternative provision in Sheffield who are looking to appoint a SEMH Teaching Assistant to aid in communication, regulation and engagement of students with a range of additional needs from September 2024.

The role of the SEMH Teaching Assistant is key to ensuring the well-being of students, supporting with behaviour regulation and reintegration in to learning. You will provide a consistently safe learning environment to suit the individual needs of the pupil.

Experience of sensory needs and how to meet these for students would be advantageous, support plans are in place for all students and will be provided for students you are designated to work with to enable you to support the child best.

You will be provided with Team Teach Level 2 training, free of charge, to ready you for your role and arm you with an abundance of de-escalation, and a deeper understanding of trauma informed response and behaviour as a form of communication.

The job

  • The school is looking for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant with experience in working within special schools to support the development of the child as a whole.
  • Reporting to the class teacher, senior leadership team and SENCO, recording information on progress and behaviours.
  • Supporting children with their learning, supporting and de-escalating potential crisis behaviours.
  • Aiding with students learning self-regulation, able to utilise a trauma informed response, calm in heightened situations and comfortable with restorative conversations with pupils.

The successful candidate will

  • Have experience working within a specialist school environment or specialist residential care.
  • Be empathetic and calm, able to connect and build rapport with students with a diverse range of needs.
  • Be organised and able to work well alone and as part of a team
