Summary

You'll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Lyme. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you'll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Working day is Monday-Friday 8:30-16:30 with occasional late lockup till 17:00 with time take as lieu. Working weekends one in every five weekends including bank holidays.

Salary: £23,868 per annum

What it's like to work here

You'll be working in a team of five Gardeners along with our enthusiastic Garden Maintenance and Garden Engagement volunteers, as well as opportunities to work with teams from other departments. You'll be an advocate for gardens, history, and nature helping to inspire our visitors and ensure they have a memorable day!

This Peak District mansion is a popular filming location and was made famous as Pemberley in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. High above Manchester, it is a beautiful and special place and two thirds of our visitors come to enjoy the outdoors here. Lyme boasts 1,400 acres of beautiful parkland and rugged moorland, 2 herds of wild red deer, a very busy programme of events, art and exhibitions.

Lyme also has extensive gardens that range from the formal Orangery Terraces with bright Victorian bedding schemes, the intricate Italian Garden with ivy-edged parterres and a new herbaceous perennial scheme to the Vicary Gibbs plantsman's garden, Killtime stream garden, double Herbaceous Borders and traditional Rose Garden. There is also a Grade 2 Listed Orangery in a Neo-Classical style and a Nursery plot where we propagate the plants used in the garden.

What you'll be doing

You'll be helping to keep the gardenin tiptop condition every day. This will involve daily checks to make sure all areas are safe for people visiting, routine tasks such as weeding, pruning and mulching, and using machinery such as hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers and tractors. You may be involved in recycling and managing green waste, along with the rest of the garden team.

Other duties will include propagation, preparing plants for sale, tree safety work and garden design and restoration**.** You'll have areas of responsibility within the garden and room to express your creativity.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you're:

  • an enthusiastic horticulturist and hands-on gardener, who's worked with hard landscaping before
  • knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail.
  • experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
  • a driver with a full licence
  • able to manage a demanding outdoor role
  • good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
  • equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own
  • able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
