We are currently looking for an experienced Bosun to join our team.

About the role:

The ideal applicant will have experience of square rig sailing, general seamanship and maintenance of sailing vessels. The Bosun is primarily responsible for care and management of all upper deck equipment, spars, sails, yards, berthing wires, ropes, fenders, awnings, flags, fittings on deck and aloft. Mainly employed on the foredeck, the Bosun must have the ability to lead and manage a team and to work effectively with young people.

The successful applicant will be required to become a uniformed member of the Sea Cadet Corps and to undertake an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check. The post holder will be responsible to the Commanding Officer TS Royalist, through the Sailing Master.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the routine maintenance, repair and serviceability of masts, yards, standing and running rigging, sails, berthing wires, ropes, fenders, awnings, flags, upper deck, superstructure, bulwarks, lockers, paintwork and the weather deck itself.
  • Supervision of the foremast, foredeck operations when manoeuvring under sail.
  • Instruction and supervision of those personnel proceeding aloft together with general seamanship instruction.
  • Overseeing and direct the day-to-day work of the Forward Watch Officer.
  • Ensuring that all harnesses are worn, maintained and used correctly.
  • Supervision of the correct stowage of sails.
  • Carry out general ship husbandry tasks.
  • To act as the Ship's Duty Officer as required.

Requirements:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to display sound leadership and ability to direct the ship's staff and sail trainees.
  • Able to interact with wide range of personnel from visiting VIPs to young cadet.
  • Comfortable when working at height.
  • Ability to instruct and educate young adults in sail training techniques
  • ENG1 or ML5 medical certification, or an ability and willingness to obtain.
  • Good seamanship and rigging knowledge and experience in ship's maintenance and can provide evidence of these skills.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Sea Cadet training procedures.
  • Experience in delivering rescue aloft techniques.
  • Detailed knowledge in the operation of square rig vessels.
  • Yachtmaster with commercial endorsement
