We are looking for an Accounts Assistant to join a friendly and professional team at a SME Civil & Structural Design Engineering consultancy firm. The Accounts Assistant will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day and month-end financial management and accounting processes, processing payroll, and managing VAT and direct tax matters. This role requires full ownership of the Accounts/Finance function and the ability to produce accurate and timely financial information.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Implement financial controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee month-end accounting processes and reconcile key control accounts.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns.
  • Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly financial reports.
  • Prepare monthly payroll data and ensure compliance with statutory regulations.
  • Manage payments for payroll, rent, PAYE, VAT, and other taxes.
  • Use internal Project Management system and Sage for various accounting tasks.
  • Raise and send sales invoices and payment applications to clients.
  • Perform credit checks on new clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Manage debtor and creditor control.
  • Provide cover for Accounts Payable tasks as needed.
  • Handle day-to-day financial queries from internal and external stakeholders.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • AAT/ACA/ACCA/CIMA (or equivalent) part qualified or qualified.
  • Degree qualification is desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years Finance/Accountancy experience.
  • Experience using SAGE 50 accounts.
  • Experience of preparing payroll data.
  • Experience of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Knowledge of financial management in an SME is desirable.
  • Strong skills in Project Management/CRM Database systems are desirable.
  • Engineering industry experience is desirable.
  • Advanced Excel skills including formulae and data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
