We seek a diligent and proactive Tax Assistant to join our clients Group Finance team. This role provides a fantastic opportunity to support all aspects of tax compliance, including indirect tax, corporate tax, and employment taxes. Working closely with the Tax Manager, you will assist with tax advisory support, process development, and ad hoc project work. This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring finance professional to gain exposure to tax compliance and advisory within a dynamic business environment.

Role Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing annual corporate tax provisions and information packs for external advisors, ensuring accuracy in analysing tax-sensitive items and capital allowances on fixed assets.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the Group's statutory returns, including Corporate Tax returns, in line with legislation and HMRC guidance, within set deadlines.
  • Support the Tax Manager in reviewing group VAT returns and ensuring accurate VAT treatment on income and expenses.
  • Act as a contact point within the Tax Team for handling basic tax queries, providing advice to the wider business.
  • Review tax treatments on invoices and expenses for PAYE Settlement Agreements and benefits to enable accurate tax reporting.
  • Provide guidance on various tax matters, including VAT, corporate taxes, and benefits taxation, seeking support from the Tax Manager as needed.
  • Participate in ad hoc project work as directed by the Senior Tax Manager or Tax Manager.
  • Identify and propose process improvements as technical knowledge develops, in consultation with the Tax Manager.
  • Develop technical tax knowledge to ensure that accurate and up-to-date advice is provided to group companies.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Qualification Requirements
Essential

  • Experience in a finance team with some exposure to tax matters.
  • ATT, AAT, part-qualified tax accountant/accountant, or relevant academic/work experience in finance.
  • Basic understanding of indirect tax principles, such as input tax, output tax, and VAT recovery.
  • Basic understanding of other tax areas, including Corporation Tax, Import VAT, duties, and Employment Taxes.
  • Strong numerical skills and an ability to apply finance experience to tax responsibilities.
  • Interest in tax and a willingness to learn, with an eagerness to expand knowledge in the area.

Desirable

  • Experience with VAT returns.
  • Knowledge of tax processes and regulations.

Other Requirements

  • Flexible working, ideally 75% on-site in Cambridge.
  • Security clearance required.
