Leicester City Council is looking for skilled School Chefs to lead the kitchen team in preparing, cooking, and serving nutritious school meals. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing food production and ensuring compliance with nutritional guidelines, standard recipes, pre-defined menus, and budget parameters. This role requires flexibility to cover other locations as needed and the ability to provide effective leadership to the team.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Plan and execute meal preparation based on pre-established menus, special dietary requirements, and meal numbers.
  • Prepare, cook, and serve food, ensuring high standards of quality.
  • Set up serving and dining areas in accordance with menu requirements.
  • Oversee the packing and distribution of food to other schools (for production hub kitchens).
  • Conduct routine cleaning of kitchen areas and equipment.
  • Supervise and direct the activities of more than 10 onsite staff involved in food production and service.
  • Provide on-the-job training and development opportunities for staff.
  • Maintain positive relationships within and outside the team, treating people with fairness and respect.
  • Act as a positive representative of the service, handling inquiries and escalating issues as necessary.
  • Promote the uptake of school meals and engage with children, parents, and carers.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a chef, preferably within a school or large-scale catering environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise and motivate a team.
  • Knowledge of nutritional guidelines and the ability to adhere to set recipes and menus.
  • Competency in managing kitchen operations, including food production, safety checks, and stock control.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage positively with children and adults.
  • Flexibility to work across different locations and adapt to service needs.
