Site Manager for Waste Operations

Duration: Immediate start for 6 months initially, with potential for extending

Working Address: Any Recycling and Household Waste Site (RHWS), Waste Transfer Station (WTS)

Hybrid Working Possibility: Yes

Working Days and Hours: Working pattern to be agreed with line manager based on 37 to 40 hours per week across 7 days. Weekend work is mandatory, a minimum of 1 in 3 but will consider more frequent if the successful candidate prefers. Overtime is likely to be available.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a hands-on Site Manager to oversee operations across all the Local Government waste sites. This role involves daily travel to RHWSs and WTSs to manage site staff and ensure smooth operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • HR Tasks: Support onboarding for new starters, conduct one-to-ones, return-to-work interviews, Annual Performance Reviews, and manage policy processes such as support plans, personal risk assessments, occupational health referrals, and disciplinary investigations.
  • Training Delivery: Provide training through workbooks and e-learning support, develop and deliver toolbox talks, and other training packages/safety briefings.
  • Safety and Compliance: Draft, monitor, and enforce safe systems of work and risk assessments, ensure accurate waste movement records, and compliance with Environmental Permits and Waste Duty of Care.
  • Quality Management: Draft processes, monitor, and enforce the Council's Quality Management System for RHWS operations.
  • Stock Control: Manage consumables, PPE & Uniform, equipment, and fuel efficiently.
  • Driving: Occasionally drive a Council 3.5 tonne box van.
  • Customer Service: Handle intermediate complaints from customers face-to-face, by telephone, and by email.

Requirements:

  • Essential:

  • Good IT skills, familiar with MS Office or equivalent packages

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Good numeracy and literacy skills

  • Experience dealing with customers

  • Experience in contract management, waste operations management, and supervision of employees in the waste management industry or similar workplace

  • Experience delivering training packages

  • Valid UK driver's licence for driving up to a 3.5 tonne vehicle, access to own vehicle, and insurance for business use

  • Desirable:

  • Valid and relevant Certificate of Technical Competence with evidence of continued competence

  • Experience driving a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes

Additional Information:

We provide PPE and may have some uniform requirements, including the potential wearing of a Body Worn Camera (BWC). The BWC will only record and make footage available for download if activated by the holder. These are part of the uniform for all field-based staff, unless reasonable adjustments are considered.
