Reporting to OS' Chief Technology Officer, the Head of Engineering will shape the future of our engineering operations, drive technological innovation, and lead a team of talented engineers to build exceptional products.

OS is renowned for its innovation, purpose, and impact for good, and our Technology engineering is essential to this. We are embarking on our 5-year 2024-2029 strategy, underpinned by our commitment to Better Data for More Destinations. We're looking at ever more innovative, effective, and scalable ways to develop products and services that our customers today and of the future will need. This role will be critical to achieving this.

You will provide strategic leadership to Engineering, building and maintaining OS' systems and services and driving technical evolution of our geospatial core capabilities, including data capture, derivation, automated feature extraction, and data delivery platforms. Leading a team of over 200 Engineers, you will empower high-performing teams to deliver modern development practices, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and collaboration.

This role is also accountable for planning and optimising the engineering of OS' most complex and critical projects, ensuring quality and performance of the products delivered, and ongoing maintenance of domain systems and services.

You will pioneer new technology and ways of working to maintain our software products and address emerging threats, and oversee the implementation of continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD). This will involve managing the automated building, testing, and deployment of software, ensuring faster, more reliable releases. Working across the cloud in MS Azure, you will be responsible for overseeing the management and optimisation of cloud resources. This includes ensuring the security, scalability, and efficiency of cloud services.

**About you

You're a seasoned technical leader with a proven track record of driving organisational goals through technology. You'll have extensive experience managing large development teams and implementing product strategies, and you'll be adept at providing technical leadership to ensure products and services align with the architectural framework. You will be an ambassador and role model to the broader engineering function, playing a leading role in developing capabilities for OS.

We're looking for someone who can confidently coach team leaders to optimise team performance while driving quality, and is also very comfortable getting stuck into development themselves. You've probably worked as a senior software developer or solution architect, or similar, before. Ideally, you also have a relevant qualification in a subject such as computer sciences, computer engineering, information management systems, software development, or business information systems.

You're experienced working in a role where you balance multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity regularly, and you know how to create a collaborative and inspiring environments for teams to thrive in that context.

What you'll bring:

  • Experience in building highly scalable, highly available, and performant systems.
  • A deep understanding of different technologies and ability to adapt to new tech trends.
  • Strong ability to manage projects and products from inception to completion.
  • A broad understanding of software development methodologies, including Agile methodologies, along with practical experience in applying these methodologies to deliver high-performing teams.
  • Adept monitoring and managing quality and performance of the solutions delivered, and the ongoing maintenance of domain systems and services.
  • Hands-on development experience and the ability to embed best practices into teams is crucial.
  • Experience of Infrastructure Management and deployment methodologies such as CI/CD is desired. In terms of capabilities, the candidate should have experience in Systems Engineering/Solutions Engineering, Technology Deployment, Integration Management, Product Development, and Technical Strategy.
  • Proven ability to develop skills and capabilities within teams and drive talent retention and growth.
  • Experience managing substantial budgets and operational business management.

**Location

We embrace a hybrid working model at OS. You will be contractually based at our fantastic HQ in Southampton, where you will be required to spend the majority of your time.
