Housing Support Worker

for our client based in Sheffield.

The Support Worker will be required to support Social Workers and Personal Advisors in the Young refugee team which is currently based at Sharrow, Nether Edge area of Sheffield as part of the Leaving Care service. The role will involve travelling around the city supporting asylum seekers.

The clients team is made up of a combination of Social Workers and Personal Advisors who are responsible for undertaking age assessments, health assessments, single assessments and present information to Legal Gateway. The Support workers will enable the Social Worker and Personal Advisors more time to undertake statutory required duties.

The role includes supporting the young people to have the skills to live independently ensuring housing, budgeting and health and wellbeing for example are key to successful and safe integration into the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Setting up home allowance (SUHA),M shopping and explaining bills and ensuring a young person understands travelling and navigating around a new city.
  • Work alongside Social Workers to provide advice and practical support to children and young people who are deemed "in need" under the Children Act 1989 or identified as in need of support.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of plans for children who are looked after / CIN or CP in accordance with their assessed need. To monitor and contribute to the review of such plans in liaison with social workers and other agencies.
  • Promote the educational, training, employment opportunities and social skills of young people and enable them to build these skills.
  • Support young people "in need" in securing and maintaining appropriate accommodation.
  • Establish links within local communities to ensure that effective responses to children and young people's needs are maximised.
  • Assist young people in the development of a range of self- care and independent living skills.
  • Promote the health of young people and enable access to the appropriate health care professionals.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Ideally 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  • Experience of working with children and young people at times of change in their lives and responding appropriately
  • Ability to positively engage children and young people in making their own decisions
  • Knowledge of safeguarding
  • Understands equality and diversity in support positive outcomes
  • Demonstrates understanding and provides support for the complexity of relationships associated with some children and young people
  • Enhanced DBS check
