We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced 'outdoors person' with a strong commitment to education through farming to manage and develop the Academy's smallholding at Holt Heath, Worcestershire. In this role, you will run day-to-day activities at the farm, manage and maintain the site, liaise with a range of partners to develop the farm for students and the Academy community, and deliver programmes to small groups of students, including those with challenging behaviour.

The Site
Esperance Farm comprises polytunnels for vegetable production, a large grazing field and sheep, goats and chickens with facilities to support educational activities including a classroom, washrooms, changing space and lockers. Farm development is focused on Foundation for Farming principles (On time, To Standard, Little or No Waste and With Joy) alongside regenerative agricultural techniques.

The Role

  • Facilitate students' and visitors' exposure to small scale farming and food production
  • Develop a vision for Esperance Farm that dovetails with the visions of the Academy and Top Barn Trust
  • Be responsible for running the small holding including all record keeping, health and safety of the holding and dealing with DEFRA, ensuring safety procedures and risk assessments are in place
  • Ensure that the Esperance Farm is financially viable as a standalone entity and is environmentally sustainable
  • Instruct and guide students
  • Work with Broadway staff who are using the site to deliver teaching and learning
  • Support with the delivery of the Aspiration programme to re-engage disaffected students

You will have relevant agriculture/horticulture qualifications (Level 4 or above), experience of working in a farming/horticulture environment and a track record of working independently. You will have experience of working with young people including coaching or instructing. You will be able to forge strong relationships with a range of partners and show evidence of initiating and delivering projects. Budget management skills, first aid qualification and health and safety management are all essential.

Why you should join us
You will get a real opportunity to make a difference within an Academy which encourages students and staff to be aspirational. We have an innovative partnership with a well-regarded school in the independent sector. Staff development is a priority for all, and we provide structured CPD.
