About The Role
Introduction

Security Officers provide and essential role in the security operations. Buildings, the security officers have 2 vital roles, firstly they must ensure the campus is safe and secure for all staff and students, secondly, they must ensure that a customer service approach is provided to all customers on campus.

You will be working on a 4-day-on-4-day-off shift pattern, 20:00 to 08:00, 42 hours per week, on a permanent, part-time basis.

Purpose:

This document will provide a clear guideline on the role and responsibilities of the security officer.

  • The security officer must ensure the campus is a safe and secure place.

Procedure

The Security Officer duties include but are not limited to.

  • To deliver the day-to-day security static and patrol operations in order to provide a safe and secure environment for all students, staff and visitors and their personal property, as well as ensuring the security and safety of university building and equipment.
  • Officers will be routinely required to think and act within a wide range of defined procedures and precedents but also frequently to use your experience, judgment and initiative to make decisions on how to respond to a variety of situations and customers, including students, staff, conference delegates, contract works staff and visitors.
  • You are to adhere to the Assignment Instructions, Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • To report for your Roster Duties on time and in full Uniform.
  • You are not to leave your shift until properly relieved.
  • To be in possession of a notebook and pen and any other equipment deemed necessary for the role.
  • To conduct patrols of the campus premises both internally and externally, as instructed by the Security Management or FM.
  • To respond to incidents and be aware of all procedures required within incidents.
  • To monitor access and egress as required to all buildings on the campus and respond to breaches.
  • To ensure Radio Checks are undertaken within the period requested by the Control Room.
  • To ensure that all problems or incidents, which occur during the course of your duties, are reported promptly to the Control Room.
  • To be conversant in the Building Fire Alarm Activation Procedure, including Fire Alarm Response & Investigation.
  • To be conversant with the procedures and trained in the operational requirements of the Emergency evacuation.
  • To ensure integrity of the security systems is maintained as directed by the security management.
  • To immediately report all potentially suspicious packages, vehicles and characters within your patrols to Control Room or shift supervisor and be advised about unattended valuables and actions to be taken.
  • To immediately report all Health & Safety hazards to the Control Room and to instigate procedures to alleviate any further risk or damage to property or persons.
  • To submit written incidents reports as required or instructed by the Security Management.
  • Security Officers are not permitted to eat or drink in uniform anywhere on the University premises in public view.
  • Officers are not to use personal mobile telephones whilst on duty except in cases of personal emergency.
  • All welfare issues such as extreme drunkenness, mental health and wellbeing should be directed to the shift supervisor. You must not leave a vulnerable student unattended.
  • You are to carry out all other duties directed by your shift Supervisor, DSM, FM and Security Manager.
  • Any other duties deemed to be appropriate or necessary to the post.

Knowledge:

  • Safety, Security and first aid policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of departmental and Trust health and safety policies, written systems of work and departmental rules and procedures.
  • Preparing clear and concise written incident reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Using Initiative and independent judgement within established policy guidelines.

Training / Qualifications

  • SIA Door Supervisor licence.
  • SIA Public Space Surveillance Licence desirable
  • Must have both a door supervisor and a CCTV licence,

Experience

  • Experience of working within the security industry.
  • Experience of working in a team-based environment.
  • Experience of working under pressure.
  • Experience of working to protocols and procedures.
  • Experience of talking to members of the public, service users.
  • Good attention to detail and completion of tasks to deadline.
  • Ability to exercise judgement with problem solving and seeking advice appropriately.
