Senior Commissioning Engineer

The Role

As Senior Commissioning Engineer, you oversee commissioning activities, ensuring that all projects, regardless of their scale or complexity, adhere to established strategy and policy. As a primary point of contact (POC) and subject matter expert (SME) for stakeholder concerns, you will facilitate communication and resolve issues between the commissioning team and operations. Your expertise are crucial not only during the commissioning of new and refurbished assets but also throughout the entire lifecycle of the project, including decommissioning. Risk management is critical aspect of the role, as you must identify and mitigate potential issues from the design phase through to project integration and handover. To ensure safety standards are met and that projects are completed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders, you must collaborate closely with project managers, teams and manager external contractors when necessary.

We are recruiting for both functional and process Senior Commissioning Engineers across three posts covering Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. You can therefore to work from our main sites close to Carlisle, Kendal, Manchester, Liverpool, Warrington, or from any of our other hubs close to the county districts above. In-person attendance is required three days per week to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, alongside some travel to other sites in the North West and flexible hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure compliance with H&S legislation and UU best practices in all Commissioning activities.
  • Support the ATO process, manage commissioning risks, and collaborate with the Integration team for asset service permissions.
  • Maintain UU permit compliance, report high-risk activities, and provide commissioning insights to the Commissioning Manager.
  • Manage the commissioning plan and file, lead commissioning meetings, and contribute to the standardisation strategy.
  • Offer technical mentoring to junior staff and input into the Takeover process and technical training delivery for UU representatives.

Skills & Experience:

  • Degree/HND qualified in relevant STEM subject, or demonstrable equivalent level of expertise.
  • Working knowledge and experience of Commissioning- including strategy, planning and delivery processes and significant experience in commissioning of capital investment projects through complete life cycle.
  • Ability to influence and direct the approach regarding commissioning across the organisation.
  • Hold a current UK/EU driving licence.
