Payroll/HR Assistant

  • Location: Ongar, Essex
  • Job Type: Fixed Term - 12 to 18 months
  • Hours: 35 hours per week - office based
  • Salary: £26,390 to £28,210 per annum

We are seeking a Payroll/HR Assistant to join our clients team at the Head Office in Ongar, Essex. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is committed, passionate, and customer-focused, with an interest in building a career in payroll and human resources. This entry-level role is designed to support the Head of the Payroll/HR Department and colleagues in managing payroll and HR for approximately 1200 staff across the UK.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Assist with the administration of payroll and HR tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Set up new starters and process leavers, ensuring compliance with all requirements.
  • Perform calculations for tax, National Insurance, Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), and other payroll-related activities.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee and payroll records.
  • File reports and timesheets weekly and ensure accurate record-keeping.
  • Handle general office administration duties, including managing correspondence, dispatching outgoing mail, recording incoming mail, and answering telephone calls.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in confidential employee and payroll record-keeping is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of payroll calculations (Tax, NI, SSP, SMP).
  • Proficient in data entry and managing worksheets and timesheets.
  • Ability to produce P45s and process leavers is ideal
  • Strong attention to detail and good mathematical skills.
  • Basic understanding of UK employment, Health & Safety, and HR legislation is ideal
  • Proficiency in using IT
  • Team player with the ability to work independently and learn quickly.
  • Self start attitude and ability to manage own time effectively
  • Ability to drive is a must because of the office location
