ESOL Tutor

Our client , a community charity has a unique opportunity for an experienced ESOL Tutor to work on the 'Travelling Together' project which supports refugees, migrants and asylum seekers living in Bristol and Torbay to integrate into life in the UK by increasing their confidence using the rail network to access employment opportunities, support services, and visit friends.

Salary: £25,000 FTE per annum
Hours: 15 hours per week

Summary of role: They are looking for a part-time ESOL Tutor to deliver conversational English Language sessions, to improve participants' ability to communicate with others and access services and employment opportunities. This will include face to face sessions in Bristol, as well as some online classes. The role will be centered around the delivery of:

  • 1:1 sessions - improving participants' English language skills and equipping them with what they need to know to navigate a train station, and how to ask for help when needed. These sessions may also include guidance on CV-writing and practice job interview questions for those who are currently seeking employment.
  • Online sessions - reaching participants via Zoom who are less able to attend in-person sessions.
  • Group sessions - with around 12 participants in each group, practicing English with each other and acting out the process of buying tickets, talking to train station staff, etc.
  • 2 days out to key cultural sites on the GWR network - demonstrating how to get a train (including reading timetables, planning journeys) to give participants practical experience in how to use the rail network.
  • 1 'meet the expert' employment workshop (available online), promoted to all participants, with a member of the rail industry - promoting it as a positive potential career choice.

The successful candidate will have a qualification or equivalent experience of teaching ESOL or literacy in group and one-to-one settings, with the ability to motivate and inspire people facing multiple barriers to integration through the delivery of quality language sessions.

You will be able to work effectively as part of a team, manage a varied workload against deadlines, keep accurate records, monitor and evaluate progress against targets, and complete funders' paperwork in accordance with GDPR.
