Trading Standards Enforcement Officer

We are seeking an Enforcement Officer to join our Trading Standards team, delivering effective enforcement and educational interventions to support local consumers and businesses, creating a better trading environment in Sheffield. The role involves a mix of casework and projects, requiring a candidate with a sound knowledge of criminal and civil procedures and investigations legislation.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Enforce Trading Standards legislation through inspections, projects, market surveillance, and targeted advice/education.
  • Conduct investigations, produce written reports for court, attend hearings, obtain warrants, undertake PACE interviews, conduct covert surveillance, and produce/serve relevant enforcement notices.
  • Provide legal advice on regulatory compliance to businesses and other services.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer care skills when interacting with consumers, providing advice and assistance to resolve consumer problems.
  • Collect, assess, analyse, and share intelligence in a lawful manner, contributing to the Service's tasking and coordination process.
  • Liaise with other council departments, enforcement agencies, government departments, and professional bodies, participating in projects.
  • Lead the development, management, and delivery of multi-agency enforcement operations.
  • Develop and provide training and advice, and help deliver educational and behaviour change initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge in designated areas of legislation appropriate to the role.
  • Represent the Service at local and regional levels and contribute to effective collaborative working.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Sound knowledge and experience of criminal and relevant civil procedures and investigations legislation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of workplace Health and Safety legislation.
  • Experience in project delivery and effective partnership working.
  • Ability to interpret and apply statutory guidance and legislation to deliver regulatory work.
  • Competent in providing legal advice on regulatory compliance and preparing information reports for court proceedings.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Flexible approach to work tasks, willing to work outside core hours, from home, and at any designated worksite.
  • Competent IT skills.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Excellent customer care skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems to meet operational targets.
  • Trading Standards Practitioner Certificate (TSPC) or equivalent qualification, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
