Pay Rates:
Days: £11.44, Saturdays/Nights: £16.13, Sunday/Bank Hols: £20.94

During your Trust placement, you'll learn to help and support mothers on maternity wards. This will involve working with experienced Midwives, providing day to day care for mothers and newborn babies, interacting and reassuring mothers.

All whilst working towards achieving the widely recognised Care Certificate with the training you need to become a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW). Throughout, you'll have supportive supervision from your mentor and Ward Manager.

Main Responsibilities

As a trainee HCSW specialising in maternity, you'll learn key skills including:

  • Assist with general bed making, cleaning beds and lockers, bedpans, trolleys and preparing for new admissions including the making up of theatre beds.
  • Undertake and be responsible for routine tasks under the supervision of the qualified nurse / midwife e.g. preparation of notes and equipment on the ward / clinics
  • Ensure security of patient / mother's valuables are locked away in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Support and provide day to day care in assisting patients / mothers / babies such as personal hygiene, support care for babies, catheter care and escorting to various Trust departments when required.
  • Establish and notify of any dietary requirement to the relevant qualified nurse / midwife and liaising with the catering team when required.
  • Assisting in the movement of patients / mothers / babies as and when required using appropriate equipment when and where necessary.

Ideal Candidate

What you'll need:

  • As an entry level role, you do not need any previous healthcare experience, although any experience in 1-2-1 care is desirable, including familial care.
  • The ability to work well in stressful situations.
  • Able to manage and prioritise care.
  • A passion for care as well as following the six enduring values that underpin 'compassion in practice'. The 6Cs are defined as: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment.
  • To be over the age of 18 or turning 18 before placement.
  • Able to work at least 30 hours a week across earlies, lates and nights during the programme.
  • A valid UK driving licence is desirable.

What's next?

If you're successful, you'll be invited to an interview and assessment day (Planned for 21st October), followed by classroom training (Planned to commence 11th - 13th November) and an induction week before you start (Planned for late November, early December)
