About the role - Occupational Health Nurse

You will be able to work independently and closely with other clinicians such as the company doctor/OHP, the Health & Safety Advisor, and other external key stakeholders (Physiotherapist). The role entails delivery of the full OH remit including complex case management, Health Surveillance, Health Promotion and Education, completion of workplace visits and attendance of absence meetings. In addition, you will be required to deliver the Annual Influenza Immunisation programme, and DSE assessments.

Responsibilities

Main Clinical Responsibilities:

  • To provide professional leadership, advice, support and guidance to Crown managers, employees and wider multidisciplinary team.
  • To complete pre-placement assessments and exit medicals.
  • To assess employees presenting to OH whether in-person (self-referral) or by written referral (management referral) and initiate management of case.
  • To write letters to GP/Specialists in line with the Access to Medical reports Act and Data Protection Act.
  • To assess individual risk for employees presenting with perceived mental health issues and taking appropriate action.
  • To advise on fitness to work and any adjustments required.
  • To respond to employee/managers' requests for support/information on the working environment.
  • To provide support to employees through potentially difficult or distressing situations.
  • To maintain appropriate records in line with departmental protocols on record keeping and GDPR & Data protection guidelines.
  • To provide health surveillance (including audio, vision, HAVS, and lung function screening) in accordance with current legislation as well as to attend appropriate training.
  • To deliver toolbox talks, education, and wellbeing sessions to the business.
  • To deliver the annual Influenza programme and Wellness Medicals.
  • To advice and co-ordinate return to work/rehabilitation of absent employees.
  • To provide positive, professional, accountable leadership to ensure the advancement of nursing practice and the role of OH within Crown.

General responsibilities

  • To monitor, review and develop Occupational Health Policies and procedures to ensure they meet legislation and Dept of Health recommendations and reflect standards of best practice.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of Health Promotion initiatives in partnership with HR.
  • Develop good working relationships and maintain effective communications with managers and other employees both within Crown and external contracts (Eviosys).
  • Responsible for the OH equipment and its maintenance, resources, clinical guidance and electronic management of OH medical records.
  • Responsible to arrange any legal agreements required for the OH department (e.g. Needle Stick Agreement) and completion of Audits.
  • To maintain valid and up to date registration with the NMC and comply with NMC guidelines in relation to professional standards and code of conduct.
  • To maintain working knowledge of Crown's policies and procedures and provide professional advice where appropriate.
  • To maintain a flexible approach to the role according to professional and service needs.
  • To work in accordance with Crown's Health and Safety Policies.
  • To note that medical information being handled by the Lead OH Advisor is strictly confidential. Failure to respect the confidential nature of this information will be regarded as a serious breach of regulations, which will result in action under the Crown's disciplinary procedure including possible dismissal.

What we need from you

  • NMC registered Nurse with appropriate OH qualification
  • Degree or Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Occupational Health
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Previous experience as a registered qualified OH nurse
  • Good knowledge of Health Surveillance (Audiometry, Spirometry, HAVS, skin assessments, lone working, forklift/ driver's medicals) and completion of Safety Critical medicals
  • Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and its provisions
  • Sound knowledge of Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
  • Excellent OH report writing skills
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Applications e.g. email, word processing etc.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of professional accountability in the scope of professional practice and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Able to prioritise own workload and manage own time, self-motivated and capable of working flexibly and ability to collaborate with other departments and work effectively without clinical supervision.
  • Confidence, assertiveness, tact, diplomacy and empathy for dealing with clients.
