Support Worker

A full or part-time Support Worker is required to assist a 13-year-old boy in Ingatestone, Essex.

Hours and shifts available:

Various hours and shifts available including a waking night or daytime shifts either in the mornings or evenings. Hours and shifts can be discussed at interview.

  • Term Time Weekdays - 6:00 until 9:00 and then 15:00 until 20:30
  • Term Time Night Shifts – Sunday to Thursday -20:00 until 6:15 - Sleep in shifts to be the same.
  • Weekend days and School Holiday's weekdays - 08:15 to 20:30 – Split shifts
  • Night-time Support at Weekends – Friday and Saturday and school holidays - 20:15 – to 8: 30 – Sleep in shifts to be the same.

You will receive a salary of £16.00 - £18.00 per hour, depending on shift.

About the client:

He is a 13-year-old boy who sustained a brain injury at the time of his birth. He has a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He receives nutrition and hydration via gastrostomy (feeding tube). He is hearing impaired and is reliant on hearing aids. He takes medication daily.

He uses Makaton (sign language) and a communication book to express himself. He has an enthusiastic sense of humour, and a zest for life. He enjoys YouTube and playing with his virtual reality headset. He requires full adult support to access activities, meet his needs and to ensure his safety.

He lives in a busy and vibrant home with his parents and four younger siblings. He attends a specialist school in the week, his support is planned around this, along with health and therapy appointments and the needs of the family.

The purpose of this Support Workers role is to:

  • Maximise his ability to participate in meaningful activities of daily living.
  • Promote his independence.
  • Meet personal care and hygiene needs.
  • Ensure that nutrition, hydration, and medication needs are met.
  • Enable and promote pursuing therapeutic and leisure activities, both at home and in the community.
  • Support in fully engaging in family life.

We're looking for a Support Worker with:

  • Ability to use IT for record keeping and care planning (or a willingness to learn).
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
  • A willingness to learn the client's communication methods.
  • The ability to drive with a full UK driving licence.
  • The ability and willingness to participate in a wide range of leisure and social activities.
  • Experience of working with young people with special needs.
  • Have clear professional boundaries and be respectful of parent's values and the way that they wish to raise their children.

The ability to respect the privacy of the client is fundamental to this position. All matters relating to his condition are to be treated as confidential and are not to be disclosed to a third party. As this employment is based in the private home it is inevitable that on occasion you will become privy to certain matters relating to the personal life and business affairs of the family. These too should be treated with the upmost confidentiality. Wherever possible, you should avoid encountering the family's personal belongings and correspondence.
