Tree Surgery Supervisor and Lead Climber

Salary: £30,000 - £40,000

Location: Newdigate / Dorking Area

Hours: Monday - Friday, 07:30 - 16:30

A Lead Climber must be proficient in the safe and correct use of the following machinery:

  • Chainsaws, Hedge Trimmers, Chippers, Polesaws, Backpack Blowers, Log Splitters.
  • Able to instruct staff members under your supervision in the safe and correct use of this equipment.
  • A lead Climber must be proficient in safe and correct Climbing and Aerial techniques.
  • Possess good knowledge of trees and be able to identify potentials hazards and best ways of approaching each job.
  • As a lead climber, you will be responsible for filling out Risk Assessments.

As the Tree Surgery Supervisor, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Checking the quality of work done and that each site is left in suitable and tidy condition.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of tools and ensuring equipment is stored in a tidy manner at the end of each day.
  • Carrying out Loler inspections.
  • Organising the teams time-management. Managing the teams day as a whole, getting organised in the yard each morning and arriving at their first site in good time (we generally aim to arrive for 8am). Ensuring prompt arrivals and departures throughout the day to fit all jobs in (if multiple jobs).
  • You must be able to manage time within a job, prioritising tasks and ensuring all necessary work is done within the allocated time frame. You will be responsible for managing the teams breaks during the day (as per the N.O.P.), ensuring they are kept within the times expected.
  • You must be confident in supervising a staff member(s), motivating and encouraging them.
  • You must be able to build a rapport with your assistants and cultivate a good working relationship.
  • Establishing and respecting boundaries, self-awareness, being open to listening and answering questions. Offering both praise for work well done and constructive criticism when needed, along with help and advice on how to improve.
  • Identifying opportunities for training during jobs, teaching your assistants and other Team Members new skills and imparting knowledge.
  • Should the need arise, you will be required to settles any disputes between staff under you supervision. If the dispute goes beyond something you can deal with, this should then be taken to Robert Scott (MD)
  • Responsible for ensuring equipment is not left on site, that tools are looked after and not abused, their van is kept clean and tidy (within reason!)
  • You are expected to liaise with office staff at the end of each day.
  • Be confident and professional in speaking with Clients, be able to build a good rapport with them and ensure they feel confident in having you work on their property.
  • Be able to deal with difficult Clients, remaining polite and courteous even when they aren't.
  • Be able to advise Clients where needed - including identifying and discussing potential additional work.
  • As Tree Surgery Supervisor you will also be involved in quoting for Tree Surgery work and recruiting new members of the tree team.
