Location: Near Woking, Surrey

Salary: £45,000 to £58,000 plus bonus and excellent benefits

Our client is a well-established Optical / Digital Instrumentation Manufacturer. Due to expansion, they are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, working within a team of 10 experienced mechanical, optical and digital engineers. The team is responsible for design, development, and production of new products. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is based at our clients manufacturing base near Woking and works closely with all departments including sales, marketing, procurement, quality and manufacturing.

As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you will be involved in designing quality electro-mechanical products using injection moulded, extruded, cast, and machined parts plus optics, electronics, and mechanisms. The position will involve working on projects through all phases of the new product introduction process. The role is hands on designing and requires the individual to be a creative and pro-active problem solver, who takes ownership throughout and uses his/her own initiative to resolve design and engineering issues. Senior Mechanical Design Engineer reports to the Design Manager and offers a salary of £45,000 to £58,000 plus bonus and excellent benefits.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer duties will consist of:

  • Capture design decisions and highlight associated technical risks.
  • Seek and share good working practices to continuously improve skill sets and the overall working of the department.
  • Liaise with external consultants, suppliers, toolmakers, test houses and internal, onsite assembly department and comprehensive machine shop.
  • Ensure designs meet the specifications for expected quality and performance.
  • Working with project management to ensure projects follow the company's internal NPI process.
  • Compile technical files to show compliance with the CE requirements.
  • Keep abreast of new digital technologies and sub systems.
  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to ensure designs meet cost constraints.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer requirements:

  • Candidates will have a minimum degree level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design.
  • The ideal candidate will have a fundamental, solid understanding of mechanical engineering.
  • An appreciation of electronics, electrical assemblies, PCB layout and power requirements.
  • Experience in the design of precision mechanical products involving intricate mechanical assemblies and mechanisms incorporating plastic mouldings, die castings and machined components.
  • Suitable previous experience may include the design of consumer type products such as mobile phones and similar telecoms equipment, printers, copiers, white goods, medical products etc.
  • Experience of tolerance studies, numerical design calculations, FEA and BOM costs is required.
  • Extensive experience of 3D CAD systems is essential, ideally with PTC Creo, although experience with other packages will be considered.
  • Knowledge of relevant analysis tools is also highly desirable.
