We are seeking a dedicated Waste Management Operative to join our team in Leicester. This role involves operating the loading shovel and other plant equipment at waste sites for the local council. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining the sites and ensuring a safe and efficient service for the benefit of the people of Leicestershire.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Operate the loading shovel and other plant to manage and bulk waste.
  • Load vehicles, maintain site cleanliness, and assist in delivering a safe and efficient service.
  • Engage with internal and external site users, maintaining positive and cooperative working relationships.
  • Ensure activities are delivered efficiently and effectively.
  • Receive deliveries, check records for compliance, and operate safely on site.
  • Maintain accurate paper-based and electronic records.
  • Use equipment and systems, including the weighbridge, to ensure site safety and efficiency.
  • Operate telehandler and baler (once trained) to load/unload products on site.
  • Sort, clean, compact, or shred all types of waste as required.
  • Load outgoing vehicles to driver/offtaker specification and accurately document.
  • Assist the Waste Management Supervisor in ensuring all site users are inducted and use the site safely.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and safe systems of work.
  • Support new team members and identify opportunities to improve customer service and recycling rates.
  • Support the achievement of all service levels.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • GCSE Maths/English (or equivalent).
  • Loading shovel/plant ticket/qualification.
  • Experience in the waste management industry or similar workplace.
  • Proficiency in the use of specialist plant, such as loading shovel, telehandler.
  • Knowledge of applying health & safety requirements to work tasks.
  • Understanding of waste disposal and treatment legislation.
  • Knowledge of driver and vehicle practices.
  • Competence to operate fixed and mobile plant.
  • Full, valid driving licence.
