Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our 'outstanding' Hackney school. This role is divided into two key responsibilities: providing tailored support for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and working as a general Teaching Assistant to support the wider classroom environment. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children with special educational needs and the flexibility to support both individual and group learning activities.
Key Responsibilities:
ASD Support (50% of role)
- Provide one-on-one assistance to a child with ASD, ensuring their emotional and academic needs are met.
- Implement tailored strategies to support the child's learning, behaviour, and communication.
- Collaborate closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and external specialists to create an individualised education plan (IEP).
- Foster an inclusive environment that supports the child's social integration and positive interaction with peers.
- Use tools and techniques such as visual aids, sensory activities, and social stories to enhance learning and engagement.
- Monitor and report on the child's progress, helping to adjust strategies as needed.
General Teaching Assistant (50% of role)
- Assist the class teacher with lesson preparation, classroom management, and group activities.
- Support small groups or individual students who may require extra help with reading, writing, or numeracy.
- Supervise students during breaks, lunchtime, and extracurricular activities, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
- Help maintain an organised, clean, and stimulating classroom environment.
- Foster positive behaviour and encourage pupils to reach their full potential in both academic and social areas.
- Provide general administrative support, such as preparing materials and assisting with displays or resources.
Requirements:
- Experience working with children, particularly those with special educational needs (ASD experience is highly desirable).
- Strong communication skills, able to collaborate with teachers, parents, and external specialists.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping children develop both academically and socially.
- Flexibility to work in a dynamic classroom environment and take on a range of tasks as needed.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g. NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning) or equivalent experience is advantageous.
