Senior National Collections Registrar

Summary We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Collections Registrar to join the National Curatorial and Conservation team in a leadership role. The National Trust looks after places that contain the work of some of the world's most recognised and celebrated artists, architects, designers and master craftsmen and were homes to some of the most renowned individuals in British history such as Winston Churchill, Bess of Hardwick, and Beatrix Potter.

What it's like to work here

In this role you will lead and inspire our small but busy team of Registrars, working closely with colleagues across national, consultants and operational teams across the Trust.

You'll be our lead for registration standards, ensuring these are pragmatic, proportionate and aligned with business needs.

You'll develop our professional practice, with public benefit at its heart, support our people and contribute to the development of our collections policies, strategies and major programmes of work, bringing the Trust's strategic aims of ‘Everyone Welcome' and ‘Looking After' to life.

What you'll be doing

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to the passionate and supportive community of colleagues working with collections at the Trust. Reporting to the Head of Collections Management and Information, you will work alongside senior specialists for collections management, information, conservation and curatorial as well as colleagues across our national and regional and property teams. You'll be able to think strategically and to develop and communicate effectively to a range of audiences.

Your practical understanding of day-to-day operational management will enable you to turn plans into reality. You'll enjoy a demanding and varied workload where no two days are the same, and thrive on the difference and impact you can make by providing practical and prioritised advice and guidance to colleagues.

Regular travel to our Head Office in Swindon and London offices will be required, as well as to sites across England, Wales and NI. There will be an opportunity to explore and agree hybrid working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust. The role will involve travel to our head office to meet with stakeholders and to carry out work.

Who we're looking for

  • Significant experience of leading collections management or curatorial work programmes and policy/procedure development.
  • Proven programme or project management experience involving planning and coordinating work with input across multiple teams.
  • Able to prioritise, broker practical solutions, manage budgets and deliver to time and budget.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of collections management including: due diligence and provenance research, loans, acquisition and disposal and relevant regulations
  • Experienced leader and team manager with a track record in creating a high performing team, able to coach and develop others to achieve objectives.
  • Places public value and our clients at the heart of what we do, engages, listens and responds to deliver professional advice and service.
  • Interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
