Job Description

Job Title: Welding Manager

  • Job Type: Permanent
  • Hours : 40 hours Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm
  • Job Location : Hybrid UK

To manage the welding department and deal with day to day administration activities, undertaking any reasonable tasks to support the business, the invigilation team and laboratory staff in their roles and responsibilities.

Carry out tasks to ensure continuous improvement in the operating efficiencies of the weld testing business operations to ensure customer requirements are met and exceeded where possible.

Contribute and lead the team in providing the highest levels of customer service to ensure contractual requirements are met.

Responsible for the development and achievement of sales through the direct sales channel to key account clients. Focusing on growing and developing existing clients, together with generating new business where appropriate. Support in development of business plans for all current and opportunity tender business.

Acting as the key interface between SGS and welding clients.

Lead business from a technical perspective relating to welding activities / RTPO.

Support business in maintaining ISO 17020 / ISO 17025 accreditation.

Key Accountabilities

Act as overall technical lead for welding related activities

To ensure that all tasks associated with weld testing contracts are completed to the required standards and deadlines as defined by the quality procedures and contractual requirements. Support quality procedures and standards.

To monitor and supervise the workload of the welding team, to ensure even distribution of work and to ensure that all priorities and deadlines are achieved. Co-ordinate welder invigilation / site based services. Support site based invigilation as necessary, witnessing joining procedures and qualification tests to international standards

Undertake technical training of weld department staff. To encourage the team and individuals in the achievement of their personal and team objectives and KPI's, to ensure efficiency and performance is maximised.

Ensure that equipment is properly maintained, safety checks and calibrations are completed on time and in line with company procedures.

Control and maintain financial records in accordance with company policies and procedures. Assist in producing reports, invoices and updating internal systems to show tasks have been completed.

Manage records to company procedures and standards that will withstand any external or internal audit.

Identify and implement where possible, improvements in current working practices to improve the operating efficiencies and customer service within the Testing business, ensuring any changes do not compromise customer service levels in the short term.

Prepare statistical information reports for analysis and further action by the business management team as required.

Liaise with customers and coordinate client enquires, being the first point of contact for customers, handling queries ensuring the correct information is communicated. Offer high levels of service and support to all testing staff, ensuring that no testing is delayed due to inefficient responses or lack of resources. Deal promptly with issues raised as appropriate. Develop trust relationships with a portfolio of key clients, ensuring best in class service and client retention. Expand relationships with existing customers by continuously proposing solutions that meet their objectives

Assist with ensuring all sites meet H&S requirements, including data entry on systems such as Q-Pulse ensuring the safety of colleagues and customers, helping to implement any new H&S objectives by liaising with the relevant SGS departments.

Identify and implement improvements in current working practices to improve the operating efficiencies and customer service within the testing office, ensuring any changes do not compromise customer service levels.

To support the business in any reasonable task required, whether specified within this performance agreement or otherwise.

Liaise effectively with production and operations management to ensure continuity of service and prioritise workload in the best interests of the business

Qualifications

  • HNC and / or formal qualification in welding technology
  • CSWIP Level 3.2 (SWI)
  • Inclusion on company register of approved invigilators through successful completion of written in-house exam and accompanied on-site invigilation of a joining procedure or qualification.
  • Clean Driving License

Advantageous

  • PCN Level 2 in Weld Inspection.
  • IWE
  • Qualification as an International / European Welding Specialist.
  • Registration as an Engineering Technician with the UK Engineering Council.
  • Degree educated in relevant discipline.
  • Achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
