Support Worker

A part-time Support Worker is required to assist a male in his 60's in Kings Lynn.

You will be working approximately 12-16 hours per week, usually Wednesdays and Fridays (except one Friday per month when he attends a woodwork and pottery activity). There may also be the opportunity to work additional hours to cover leave and to support at art classes once per week on a sessional/block basis.

About the client:

He suffered a stroke because of an accident at work. As a result, he has physical, cognitive and communication impairments. He is proactive with his rehabilitation, working towards greater independence, but continues to need help with some daily living skills, therapy tasks, activities outside of the home including attending groups, gym and swimming, communication and engaging in his previous hobbies. He requires 24-hour supervision. His wife provides significant support in addition to the employed care team.

He has a busy timetable of therapy and activities he undertakes. Applicants must be able to drive to be able to support his timetable of activities.

As Support Worker, your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the clients well-being and happiness.
  • Maintaining a safe environment.
  • Providing support as directed by the care plan, being aware of any guidelines, rehabilitation programmes and risk assessments.
  • Assisting with mobility needs, both within the home and in the community (Mr S uses a walking stick when outdoors).
  • Assisting with therapy programmes under the direction of the clinical team (Physiotherapist and Speech and Language Therapist)
  • Supporting to identify and research activities and events he would like to attend.
  • Acting as a companion/buddy and to help the client engage in all activities and conversation as appropriate.
  • Driving the client to community activities.
  • Liaising with the family and Case Manager about progress.
  • Advising the Case Manager and family of any concerns regarding physical or psychological health and liaising with the GP if necessary.
  • Keeping clear and accurate records of care and support provided on our electronic care system (training provided).
  • Using initiative, particularly when unforeseen events occur, and family are not directly available to provide advice or guidance.
  • Attending supervision meetings and training sessions, as requested.

We're looking for a Support Worker with:

  • Ability to use simple IT for record keeping and care planning (or a willingness to learn).
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Able to drive, confident driver both local and longer distances with own vehicle (and able to use this for work)
  • Ability to motivate and encourage the client to further develop his independence and reach his full potential.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to take part in activities that he chooses.
  • An interest in various exercise activities including gym and swimming.
  • An interest in general knowledge, history, geography and current / world affairs.
  • An interest in art-based activities including painting and model making.
  • An interest in gardening and home maintenance / DIY.
