Head of Payroll

Overview:

  • Based in Oxford
  • £65,000 - £80,000 salary
  • 5 hours per week
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays
  • Monday - Friday
  • Hybrid - 3 days in the office, reducing to 2 with service
  • On site parking

Job specification:

  • Manage a separate Profit & Loss account.
  • Develop and oversee the strategy for handling multi-cycle payrolls efficiently, accurately, and timely, ensuring compliance with customer, HMRC, RTI, and other statutory reporting deadlines.
  • Recommend and implement changes to operating procedures for workflow and scheduling to meet productivity and quality standards.
  • Promote continuous process streamlining and automation, leading and participating in projects aimed at improvements.
  • Ensure well-controlled work processes and the protection of confidential payroll information.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide professional development for the payroll team.
  • Ensure clear communication and collaboration with other departments and business units.
  • Stay updated on legislation and industry best practice.
  • Collaborate with Compliance and Operations to ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, support risk management processes and internal controls, and promote a culture of compliance and ethics within the team.

Person specification:

  • 5 years+ of leadership or senior management experience within a large payroll bureau environment.
  • Fully CIPP Qualified.
  • Strict attention to detail, solid judgment, and strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills with a proven track record of organising others to achieve goals and plans, managing time effectively to ensure all tasks are completed within stated timeframes.
  • Tech-savviness, with a flexible yet firm approach.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including data analysis tools such as VLOOKUPs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organisation.
  • Well-developed problem-solving abilities and a commitment to quality service.
  • Willingness to travel regularly between sites as needed.
  • Experience in developing a Global Payroll proposition and/or broad HR services is also desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence with regular access to a car.
