School Caretaker

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Hours - 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday - flexibility is required in order to cover early and late shifts during periods of sickness and absence.

We are seeking a dedicated School Caretaker to join an established school site team, reporting to the Premises Manager. This role is essential in maintaining the security and functionality of our school, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students, and visitors.

Day to Day of the Role:

  • Maintain the security of the school, including unlocking grounds and managing alarms as per the rota.
  • Conduct daily visual checks of the property, inspecting all relevant areas.
  • Ensure all service areas, such as heating, lighting, and water systems, are operational.
  • Manage the stock of items, including cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Perform first-fix maintenance of fixtures and fittings, such as repairing door handles and cleaning up spillages.
  • Undertake basic plumbing tasks, including clearing blockages and drains.
  • Carry out painting and decorating tasks as required.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Keep outside areas neat and tidy, ensuring safe access to the school in all weather conditions.
  • Assist with deliveries, liaise with contractors on-site, and oversee their work as needed.
  • Organise waste for collection and dispose of materials safely and hygienically.
  • Undertake porterage tasks, including setting up and clearing away furniture.
  • Report any significant problems to the Premises Manager promptly.
  • Observe safe working practices while performing job duties.
  • The successful candidate will be part of a rota that includes working approximately 1 in 4 Saturdays.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Previous caretaking or maintenance experience is highly desirable.
  • Good communication skills, with proficiency in reading and writing in English.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude and the confidence to work alone.
  • A flexible approach to working hours and duties.
  • Basic knowledge of IT.
