Global Water Intelligence (GWI) is the leading specialist publisher and events organiser serving the international water sector. We create value by connecting people and ideas to solve the world's water challenges. It is delivered by a talented and committed team of editors, communicators, project managers, and sales people based in our central Oxford headquarters.

Our revenues come from two main sources: selling subscriptions to our business intelligence platform and organising the Global Water Summit. Both products are highly respected by our customers and unchallenged market leaders in our sector.

The Role

It is an exciting time to join us: we are on a journey to redefine our online publishing product offering, while continuing to strengthen and diversify our events and community offerings. We are undergoing a major digital transformation and rethinking how are delivering value to our customers through our products, and the Design and Development team are at the centre of this change.

The newly created Head of Design & Development role will report into the Operations Director and work closely with Directors across the business. It is an exciting role which involves working at a high-level and combines operational leadership, building a creative vision for our publishing and digital products, and engaging with business goals and understanding how the Design and Development teams should contribute to realising these aims.

The Head of Design & Development will:

  • Lead, train, and develop an inhouse team of Designers and Developers
  • Work with directors across the business to build systems and workflows to support our business transformation and changes to our publishing models
  • Engage intellectually with the content we are designing and developing to ensure that our digital and publishing products tell compelling visual stories and deliver exceptional value to our customers.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Design team with a "hands-on" approach (support team leaders with setting goals, priority management etc.)
  • Oversee design project schedules and deadlines, collaborating cross-functionally with various teams across GWI
  • Review work, provide feedback, and implement improvements
  • Support team in building effective workflows (i.e. improving the user experience along the creative process and integrating analytics)
  • Manage the day-to-day running of the Development team according to the evolving needs of the business
  • Support the development process with prioritisation / de-prioritisation according to business need
  • Identify training and professional development opportunities within the team
  • Remove bottlenecks, resource management, utilise and ensure software/tools are maintained effectively

About you

For the Head of Design & Development post, we're looking for applicants with the following qualities:

  • Be inspired by the intellectual challenge of understanding the ideas that grow out of our data and be excited by working in a creative field underpinned by data
  • Flexible thinker and an ability to create workflows and systems that are built around business culture and needs
  • Experience of managing a design / development team in a similar B2B environment
  • A "hands-on" approach, with relevant experience gained in a creative field and keen interest in design
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Problem-solving mindset and excellent process improvement skills
  • A "big picture" thinker, with the ability to keep the small details in mind
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines effectively
  • UX/UI design experience with user-centred design principles and best practices
  • Broad skills with various software and tools, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)

On offer

Up to £45,000 depending on experience plus excellent company benefits including pension, 25 days holiday, and hybrid working.
