Front End Software Engineer Apprentice

Telespazio UK are seeking an apprentice to join the Ground Software Systems (GSS) group, developing, maintaining, containerizing and migrating web-based apps.

Overview:

An exciting opportunity within Telespazio UK to work on the UK Government's Defra Data Services Platform. Working as a Software Engineer you will be responsible for developing new web-based apps, primarily using the Next.js framework, Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model and SPARQL, as well as maintaining, improving and containerizing existing apps. In addition, you will be responsible for other tasks as necessary to support the Service and Project Managers, such as deployment, testing and documentation. You will be comfortable in working and learning a variety of different technologies across the full stack but with a focus on front-end, as well as a familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes and cloud-based deployments.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing new applications, primarily using Next.js, Javascript with the React framework
  • Translating designs and wireframes into high quality code
  • Understanding existing codebase to translate existing applications into new improved ones
  • Optimizing components for maximum performance across a vast array of web-capable devices and browsers
  • Maintaining and modifying existing applications written in a variety of technologies.
  • Containerising (docker) components for deployment to Kubernetes
  • Creating and maintaining Helm charts for Kubernetes deployments
  • Create and maintain environment on Microsoft Azure
  • Writing and running tests
  • Producing clear documentation
  • Working with the wider team, supporting change requests and other development activities

Required skills:

  • Demonstrable previous experience of coding (coursework, hobby etc)
  • Javascript, React and Next.js
  • Good investigation skills and the ability to work with unfamiliar technologies
  • Linux (desirable but not essential)

Entry requirements:

  • The learner must have completed a Level 3 Software Development Apprenticeship with QA or have an equivalent qualification with another training provider
  • OR an A-level in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) subject and a successful completion of our aptitude test
  • OR a BTEC Diploma in IT and a successful completion of our aptitude test
  • OR 2 years' experience in a relevant role and successful completion of our aptitude test

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.

If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.
