Project Worker - Maternity Peer Support

The Project Workers are to work in Barnardo's Midlands South Locality specifically to cover the Nuneaton and Bedworth geography.

The postholder will be required to be flexible to work across the Nuneaton and Bedworth area. For this reason, access to your own transport would be essential.

This role requires flexibility and the postholder may be asked to work evenings and weekends with preferred working days including Monday and Tuesday but we are open work flexibly with the right candidate.

Some of the key responsibilities of the role:

  • Establishing the service within the community

  • A commitment to the pilots aims and objectives and to be flexible to adapt service provision to be suit for the intended service users

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with service users and peer supporters

  • Support pre and postnatal women to engage in health-promoting activities, such as diet, quitting smoking, and breastfeeding

  • Recognise anxieties or concerns of service users and to be aware of peri-mental health issues - responding appropriately, supporting service user to access appropriate professional support or using appropriate referral pathway to escalate concerns.

  • Contribute to the early access of maternity services and strengthen relationships between families and local maternity, health and other relevant services by supporting women to understand antenatal and postnatal care pathways by sharing information and resources in formats that is suitable for the intended service users.

  • Person centred approach

  • Delivering antenatal and postnatal groups and 1-1 in Children and Family Centres, George Elliot Hospital and suitable community venues

  • Community outreach work - attending existing groups to promote service/support families and recruit peer supporters

  • Responding to professional referrals to support families on a 1-1 basis and to assign to peer supporters

  • Flexible delivery approach in person or virtually

  • Establish effective peer support offer

  • Providing support to peer supporters

  • Developing peer support offer

  • Recruit and induct peer volunteers with lived experience

  • Support and supervise volunteers

  • Ensuring offer is accessible and inclusive

  • Exploring online groups, WhatsApp groups, social media/facebook groups, support groups

  • In community settings/ hospitals / places of worship

  • Support for new mothers to adjust to parenthood though peer support

  • Assist families to access antenatal and postnatal appointments by removing barriers such as transport by organising transportation through local agreed providers, this includes local volunteer organisations and taxi services

  • Good understanding of wider determinants of health, including social, educational, economic and environmental factors and their impact on service users

  • Keep clear, accurate and timely records of work being carried out as per local recording protocol

  • Maintain confidentiality

Although this contract has a permanent status, please be aware that this post is subject to funding currently to June 2025 and therefore should this funding not be extended further, you may be subject to a redundancy consultation or a TUPE arrangement. This contract is due to expire on June 2025.
