About Us:

The Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell (MLC) https://www.har.mrc.ac.uk/ is located in an expanding science innovation park in Oxfordshire and is an internationally renowned centre at the forefront of genetics research. As the hub of the new National Mouse Genetics Network, the specialist facilities and capabilities of the MLC support a number of distinct research clusters spread across the UK to accelerate our understanding of human disease.

About the Role:

This critical role will support MRC Harwell's standing as an international centre providing access to mouse resources to an extensive network of UK and overseas clients. The MLC is also responsible for the National Mouse Archive, which currently holds >3,000 mouse stocks, many of which are recognised as unique mouse models of human genetic disease.

The primary function of this role will revolve around the cryopreservation of mouse models of human disease. In response to specific requests the post-holder will also be asked to recover mouse strains from the archive using in vitro fertilisation and embryo-transfer techniques.

A large proportion of the work will involve handling laboratory animals and the post-holder would need to demonstrate confidence in this area, as well as an interest in animal welfare and commitment to the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement).

The MRC is an excellent place to develop yourself further and a range of training & development opportunities will be available to you, including professional registration with the Science Council.

About You:

Ideally you will need:

  • A qualification in biological science
  • Previous experience of working within a laboratory environment
  • Good computer skills
  • The ability to follow standard operating procedures to produce work of a high standard
  • Previous experience of working with laboratory animals would be a distinct advantage

If you don't meet all of the criteria but have cross-over skills we would still encourage you to apply because you may may be right candidate for another role.
