Laboratory Supervisor

We are pleased to announce that an opportunity has arisen for a full time Laboratory Supervisor to join our fantastic teams at Wood Centre for Innovation (WCFI), Culham Innovation Centre and Heyford Park Innovation Centre (with 4 days a week spent at WCFI, and the remaining day split between Culham and Heyford Park). We are open to discussing suitable working patterns at interview stage.

Located in a stunning woodland setting, the Wood Centre for Innovation offers a wide range of flexible workspaces. As well as a fantastic location in Headington's Digital Health and Life Science Cluster, the Centre is one of Oxford's most efficient buildings with natural heating and cooling systems. Culham Innovation centre is set at the heart of the Culham Science Centre, home of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). Our Heyford Park Innovation centre is based on a former RAF base and has been home to a number of successful bioscience start-ups some of which have grown and graduated to their own dedicated premises.

The Laboratory Supervisor will ensure sustained operational efficiency of the relevant centres' Laboratories and adherence to all core laboratory processes and procedures by Oxford Innovation staff and customers, with a focus on laboratory equipment maintenance, health and safety and delivery of excellent customer service. Oxford Innovation Space operates a network of centres that provide flexible office, workshop and laboratory space and business support services to companies throughout the UK. We now manage over thirty centres across the UK for a variety of public and private sector clients, providing space and support to nearly 1000 exciting, innovative and growing companies.

This role will be pivotal in supporting the Centres' teams and the Laboratory Operations and Safety Committee (LOSC) in ensuring and delivering operational excellence, market leading customer service and compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements in the laboratories in our centre. We expect the post holder to identify commercial and operational risks, and then provide recommendations and implement actions that mitigate the identified risks in pursuit of our mission to support entrepreneurs and growing businesses.

Experience:

  • Good qualifications or relevant experience in a life science subject area - Biology, Biochemistry, Life/ Medical Sciences
  • Practical Laboratory experience essential (can demonstrate at least 2 year experience working within a lab). Experience of working within a Containment 2 laboratory is desirable but not essential.
  • Assisting with the preparation of risk assessments and knowledge of the associated regulations (COSHH and biological safety- desirable).
  • Desirable but not essential- First Aid at work certificate, COSHH qualifications or training, Training/Experience on how to handle Biological/Chemical Spills, handling Liquid Nitrogen, understanding of Pressure Systems Regulations and Biosafety. Full on the job training in these areas will be given.

  • A good team worker with the ability to organise others and ensure adherence to core processes and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral.
