Gardener

As a Gardener for the National Trust, you'll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Hanbury Hall. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you'll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.

Working Patterns: 915 hours per annum, core days will be Monday & Tuesday with one weekend per month.

This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year.

What it's like to work here

A country retreat in the heart of Worcestershire. The house and garden, originally a stage-set for summer parties, offer a glimpse into life at the turn of the 18th century. Included in the Hall are original wall-paintings by Sir James Thornhill, which are full of drama and politics and show the birth of Georgian society.

The original formal gardens, designed by George London, have been faithfully re-created and complement the relaxed later gardens, with orangery, orchards and walled garden.

What you'll be doing

You'll be helping to keep the gardenHanbury Hallin tiptop condition every day. This might involve daily checks to make sure all areas are safe for people visiting, routine tasks such as weeding, pruning and mulching, and using machinery such as hedge cutters, leaf blowers, strimmers, lawnmowers and tractors.

Other duties might include propagation, cutting flowers for the house, preparing plants for sale, working in the park, tree safety work and garden design and restoration**.** You may be involved in recycling and managing waste, along with the rest of the garden team.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you're:

  • knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail.
  • experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
  • a driver with a full licence
  • able to manage a demanding outdoor role
  • good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
  • equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own
  • able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
  • trained as a professional gardener/horticulturist. Good level of practical experience (e.g. NT 1 year Foundation and 2 year Diploma)
  • RHS level 2 qualified or equivalent
