Principal/Associate Ecologist

My client is an environmental / engineering consultancy looking to hire a Consultant Ecologist. Within their infrastructure and environment (I&E) team of 20 staff, you'll be working with truly multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions to complex ecological issues arising across various developments such as residential, commercial, industrial, sports facilities, battery storage, logistics parks, theme parks, international developments.

They have a flat hierarchy and encourage development at every possibility. They are aiming to double the size of the I&E team over the next two years, making it a very exciting time to join.

They are owned by a large European company with huge financial backing, empowering all staff to function in a medium sixzed consultancy, with the power to make real positive change.

Your new role

This role routinely involves conducting:

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (habitat surveys and condition assessments).
  • Biodiversity Impact Assessments.
  • Protected and priority species surveys.
  • Preparing quotations and tenders.
  • Ecological Impact Assessments and further detailed assessments.
  • Project management and organisation.
  • Team leadership and management (if desired).
  • Carrying out desk studies, consultations, research, data management and analysis, and report writing.
  • Liaising with clients and statutory bodies.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Genuine and demonstrable enthusiasm for ecology and the environment;
  • Experience of phase 1 habitat surveys/ UK Habs and protected species surveys;
  • Member of CIEEM;
  • Degree or equivalent in an ecology related discipline; MSc desirable;
  • Experience of using QGIS or ArcGIS desirable;
  • Survey licence for a protected species e.g. bats, dormouse, GCN, barn owl, rare reptiles etc. is required, ideally Level 2 Bat;
  • Happy to lead field teams and manage projects;
  • Willingness to be flexible as required;
  • Excellent report writing skills;
  • Motivated to work both independently and as part of a team, often in remote locations and sometimes during unsociable hours;
  • Good communication skills both with colleagues, clients and third parties;
  • Experience of writing or securing European Protected Species Mitigation licences (EPSM) for at least one protected species;
  • Comfortable designing surveys and quoting for work; and
  • Full driving licence and use of a vehicle.
