Science Technician

A supportive and academically thriving secondary school in Hackney is looking for an experienced Science Technician to join the team. As a science technician, you will be joining a close knit science department with the students at the centre of what they do. The department is well resourced, and staff retention is high. As a science technician, you will be supporting students up to A-level, in practical sessions and in the classroom. Experience in a school laboratory role is highly desirable, as is experience with secondary aged children.

Job Requirements:

  • A degree in a science specialism
  • A higher degree (masters or PhD) is welcomed but not essential
  • Experience in a school based lab technician role
  • Excellent organisational skills and high attention to detail
  • A strong understanding of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
  • Knowledge of safe working practices and Health and Safety guidelines relating to specific work are

Typical Duties:

  • Prepare, organize, and construct resources for teacher demonstrations and practical examinations.
  • Set out and remove equipment and materials for classroom use.
  • Collect, clean, and store equipment in designated areas, ensuring readiness for use.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Dispose of used materials safely and according to approved procedures.
  • Ensure statutory and mandatory checks of materials and equipment are completed by qualified personnel.
  • Report and arrange repair or disposal of unsatisfactory or unsafe materials and equipment.
  • Restrict unauthorized access to equipment and materials when not in use.
  • Advise on health and safety issues related to equipment and chemicals.
  • Operate manual and/or computerized systems for administrative tasks.
  • Maintain an inventory and records of departmental resources.
  • Oversee ordering, purchasing, receiving, checking, storing, and distribution of resources.
  • Cover for colleagues as required.
  • Support staff in ensuring the general safety of students.

  • Assist with the evacuation of the science area during emergencies.
  • Adhere to college procedures and policies.
  • Ensure equality of opportunity and health and safety for students, staff, and visitors, including participating in training and risk assessments.
