Library Assistant

Do you have a passion for delivering excellent customer service and would love to support students within an impressive University Library?

This university are expanding their team of Reader Assistants at SOAS Library to cover evening shifts working predominantly evening shifts until 11.30pm and weekends. The Reader Assistants provide excellent customer service and supports the effective delivery of Library services to researchers, students and visitors.

There are 3 vacancies - 2 roles at 28 hours per week and 1 role at 35 hours and you will be based on-site daily.

We are looking for someone with a customer service focus, excellent attention to detail as well as a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.

The Role:

You will need to work flexibly to deliver a range of core tasks in support of the front-of-house services in the Library. You will contribute to the development of outstanding reader services for all those who use the Library, with a strong focus on providing excellent customer service.

As part of a team of Reader Assistants, you will be responsible for planning and prioritising your work and, where appropriate, the work activities of a team ensuring that targets/deadlines are met. You will also be required to propose and implement improvements to current working methods/practices.

Duties include:

  • Clearing, tidying, sorting, shelving and re-shelving material throughout the Library
  • To work on all Library service points in line with service need providing excellent customer service
  • To receive and answer queries from Library users in person or remotely, guiding users as required to the appropriate physical or electronic resource
  • To assist and source learning materials for Library users requiring assistance
  • To participate in Library tours, induction visits and general user education as required.
  • Update library catalogue and produce basic reports on items shelved.

Experience required:

  • A pleasant and helpful manner when dealing with users
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Numeracy to carry out efficient shelving
  • Ability to lift boxes, manoeuvre large trolleys and shelve above head height including heavy and outsize items. The role involves some lifting and carrying
  • Effective planning, organisational and prioritising skills, including ability to respond to changing pressures and requirements
  • Collaborative and cooperative team worker
